Great news! We have filled all the vacant volunteer positions for the 2017/2018 school year except:
Fun Lunch Coordinator(s)
Please email email@example.com if you would like to learn more about what the positions entail.
Did you know? Jennie Elliott School Council is a parent-run group that coordinates activities and events for the school that go beyond the day-to-day. These activities raise thousands of dollars for the school's technology, music, physical education, and art programs in addition to artist in residencies and various sporting programs.
There are many volunteer opportunities of varying time commitments. When it comes to volunteering for School Council, even a little time can make a big impact. Here are a few key positions we are looking to fill for the 2017-18 school year:
Fun Lunch Coordinator(s)
Did you know that our Fun Lunch (Healthy Hunger) program is a major fundraiser for the school, bringing in $12,000-$15,000 per year in profit that goes directly back to purchasing technology, equipment and special experiences for our children? Many parents are also familiar with the joy that comes with not having to make lunches on Fun Lunch days or snacks on Special Recess days!!! We are looking for 1-2 parents to coordinate the Fun Lunch program which involves planning the lunches in conjunction with Healthy Hunger, purchasing the drinks and snacks that go with the lunches, communicating to the school community about the lunches and distributing the lunches/recess snacks on Fun Lunch and Special Recess days. Distributing the lunches/recess snacks and cleaning up afterward is a 2 hour commitment from 10:30-12:30 at the school on a Wednesday or Friday every second week, and planning/purchasing/communicating about the lunches/snacks requires another 2-3 hours per month that can be done during the day or evenings around the coordinators' time and schedules.
Parent Education Coordinator(s)
In past years the Parent Education Coordinator has organized guest speakers who are experts in their field to come to the school (usually one in the Fall and one in the Spring) on a weeknight to share information with parents about topics related to parenting, childhood anxiety, raising resilient children, Internet safety, street drug information and safety, among many other subjects. This is a role that could stay the same, or evolve in to coordinating more of a workshop/summit format for parents once or twice per school year, and/or to sharing resources and information with the parent community via email/school council website. This position could be mostly performed in the evenings and would take between 5-15 hours of the coordinator's time once or twice a year.
Family Dance Coordinator(s)
A true highlight of the school year for the students at Jennie Elliott, the Family Dance occurs in February. The Family Dance Coordinator typically spends 15-20 hours the month prior to the dance organizing volunteers, soliciting donations for food and drinks sold at the dance, and organizing the music (DJ) and decorations which can be done during the day or evening around the coordinators' time and schedules. Setting up the dance, decorations, food and drink booth, hosting the dance and clean-up afterward is a full 3-4 day commitment for the coordinator encompassing 1-2 days prior to the dance, the day of the dance and the day afterward.
Jennie Elliott is a wonderful school. While there are many things that go in to the making of a great school, one thing that we can attest to is the dedication of the parent community at Jennie Elliott. Jennie Elliott is comprised of very hard-working, caring, committed parents who take a very active, engaged approach to their children's day to day lives at school. These are parents who devote hundreds of volunteer hours per year organizing special school spirit events such as picnics and dances, fundraising thousands of dollars in order to purchase technology, music, art and gym equipment as well as providing special in-school residencies, helping out in classroom reading groups and volunteering for off-site and in-school field trips, updating school billboards, coordinating Fun Lunches and casino fundraisers, organizing Home Reading books and participating in so many more activities, roles and events. This kind of dedicated parent participation significantly improves and enhances the quality of our children's experience at school every day and further serves to role model care and commitment to others and our community. We are very grateful to the parents and caregivers in the Jennie Elliott community for contributing so immensely toward making Jennie Elliott such a great place for our children to learn, in turn supporting our children to become the caring, committed leaders and adults of tomorrow.
We currently have a Request for Proposal out in the market for photography services for next fall. If you are interested in learning more or would like to be involved in the selection of the photography provider please email firstname.lastname@example.org.

One of our strengths as a school is the relationships we have with our families. Another round of parent/teacher/student conferences just wound up and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive. During that time the Gr. 6 students, supported by parents, ran a fabulous bake sale. The week before that was the parent run (Joanne C.) perogy/sausage fundraiser as well as our monthly school council meeting. Parents volunteer in classrooms, go on field trips and support us in myriad other ways. We do have one area of need that requires highlighting.
School council is parents, administration and teachers working together to enhance student learning. In order for council to have optimal impact all of the council positions need to be filled and meetings need to be well attended. At this time, we have several positions that need to be filled including Fun Lunch Coordinator(s), September/June Picnic Coordinator(s), Family Dance Coordinator(s), Supplemental Snack Program Coordinator(s) and Parent Education Coordinator(s). If you can help out please send me an email and I will forward it to Kathryn and Sarah, our council chairs. You are invited to the next meeting on April 24 at 7:00 p.m. in the library. All of our wonderful volunteers are invited to the Volunteer Tea on May 12.
Every few years we reassess our service providers. If you are interested in being involved with selecting the photographer for 2017/2018 school year please contact Sarah at email@example.com.
